New 2015 FIAT 500L at Brown Daub Fiat for Easton, PA

The 2015 Fiat 500L is the big brother to the 500, and though its name differs by only one letter, the 500L is its own car. Introduced just last year, the Fiat 500L offers much of what the 500 does not: rear seats that adults can actually use, comfortable road manners, and a more substantial presence. Think of the 500L as the more mature, versatile Fiat. Still, this 5-passenger hatchback is hardly stuffy. It retains the whimsical looks, good fuel economy, and Euro appeal that Fiat has conveyed since re-entering the U.S. market a few years ago. The 500L isn't as much fun to drive as the Mini Cooper Countryman or quite the bargain that is the Kia Soul, but for Fiat fans desiring more room, it could be just the ticket.

Under the 500L's Hood

Powering all 500L models is a 1.4-liter MultiAir Turbo four-cylinder rated at 160 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. It's the same engine found in the 500, so it's a little more taxed in this heavier model. Despite what the Trekking model might have you think, power is sent to the front wheels only; a six-speed dry dual-clutch transmission and a six-speed manual transmission remain available, while for 2015 Fiat has added a third transmission option, a six-speed conventional auto. Its appearance is likely meant to address negative feedback for the other two, especially the dual-clutch.

Design of FIAT 500L

The 500L is 27.7 inches longer and 6 inches wider than the city-sized 500. Fiat points to EPA interior volume as proof that the L is a big car in a small package. It's not a case of all hat, no bistecca, but the 500L isn't quite large. The high roof gives the 500L very good head and shoulder room for all passengers, though it's best for four adults, max. In front, the width is more appreciated, since the 500 forces drivers into awkward stretches to reach the pedals.

There's barely any elbow contact with a front passenger, but in both 500L hatchbacks, the seats themselves are very comfortable. The bottom cushions are rather hard, and they're rounded off in the European idiom, for easier pedal access--not squared off, for better leg support, as most American drivers expect. Lounge models are at the top of the line, and they include power heated leather front seats, driver lumbar adjustment, split-folding rear seatbacks with fore-aft adjustment (and recline/tumble), fog lamps, and a dual-zone climate control system.
